What’s The “File Doctor Stopped Working” Error?

QuickBooks File Doctor software is a mixture of the “QuickBooks 2014 R4” program and older versions. Intuit designed the software to fix minor errors and correct other glitches in QuickBooks. Users have had issues with the software in a few cases. The software sometimes stops working, crashes or hangs, or displays an exception. The application will throw an error stating that File Doctor is not working when such an event occurs.

These are some common reasons why this utility may not function properly from time to time:

  • You’re trying to access the incorporated file.
  • It is unsuccessful in restoring files.
  • Update the files.
  • This error could occur when you attempt to convert an older version of company files via a network.
  • You may lose a few QuickBooks files during the installation phase.
  • When files are corrupted, lost, or damaged, the error will be apparent.

Solutions to this error

1: Launch QuickBooks file doctor manually

Sometimes the problem might be as simple a fault in the launch command receiving end. 

  • Start the application, and wait for the screen to display “No Company Open”
  • Go to File-> Utilities-> ‘Repair Files and Network Problems’.
  • Click on OK in the dialog box. The quickbooks file doctor will restart the application with administrator rights.
  • Click Yes in the dialog box.
  • To log in to your file, enter your credentials. The QuickBooks file doctor will now begin to repair your file.
  • Select ‘File Diagnosis only’ from the Advanced Settings menu.
  • Click Next.
  • Once the prompts are complete, you can open your file to check for any issues or repairs.

2: Restore backup of corrupted QBW

Sometimes QuickBooks file doctor fails to launch automatically. 

  • Backups must be made for any files that have been damaged. Backups are useful in replacing corrupt files with those that have been saved.
  • Open QuickBooks, click on “File”, then click on “Open or Restore Company”.
  • Click on the button that says “Click Open Or Restore a Backup Copy”, and then click on “Next”.
  • Click on the “Next” button and select the option “Local backup”.
  • You will see a drop-down menu where you can browse for and choose the backup file location.
  • Select the file with the “.QBB extension”, then click on “Open” and “Next”.
  • You will see a “Save in” drop-down menu, from which you can choose the location to restore the files.
  • The name field must contain the file name. With the entry of “*.QBW”, a “Save as” field will automatically appear.
  • To complete the restoration process, you must click the “Save” button.

Notable: If the above steps fail, you can opt for “Auto Data Recovery” to recover your data.

3: Use AutoData Recovery

Within a few hours of their creation, QuickBooks files can be auto-examined using the ADR (Auto Data Recovery). Files that work without error are automatically saved to a backup folder in the Auto Data Recovery folder. The backup is kept for 12 hours/24hrs or as long as QuickBooks is open.

If the error persists, you can use this option to recover the files and restore them to the original state they were in.

4: Disable hosting mode and install antivirus software

You must turn off File Doctor’s hosting mode to ensure that File Doctor runs properly on your system. Next, change the Security Firewall setting to allow remote connections from your computer. If McAfee antivirus is installed, follow these steps:

  • Click on ‘Web & Email Protection” in McAfee’s software.
  • Go to Firewall. Click on Ports and System Services. Click on the “Add” button.
  • Then type eMule under Services Name. Type the TCP data to your QuickBooks application in Local TCP/IP ports.
  • Type the TCP data to your QuickBooks application under the Local UDP Port.
